The Fiend Folio...

Was not cool.

Never was. Never will be. Like... I think Aboleths are from it? But they're like the only interesting thing in the whole damned book.

ETA: July 3rd.
I guess I don't have anything against Lamia Nobles either, but regular lamia should have been snake ladies in the first place, I don't know WHERE the hell Gary got the whole lion centaur thing from. WTF. The Wis drain they both have is strange too.

  1. The Githyanki were and continue to be fucking awesome. Their art justifies the entire FF, if nothing else.

  2. I dunno. I don't think I get them. I wanna revisit this post later with a more thorough readthrough, especially because I noticed last night Aboleths are actually from Monster Manual 2.

  3. The Fiend Folio is awesome! You've got crypt things which split the party, Caryatid Columns, Drow, Githyanki/Githzerai creatures and conflict, the flaming newts and their giant lizard mounts and the Elemental Princes and that badass bronze dragon mount one of the princes rides. Then theres the Huecuva and dark creepers and Dark Stalkers! those guys are cool and all kinds of stuff. And cool art too. Anyway that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

  4. Aboleths are from MM2 (by way of Dwellers in the Forbidden City, module I1).

I've gotten a lot of mileage out of the FF over the years: Lloth and Drow, of course, but death knights, jermalaine, caryatid columns, two-headed trolls, mountain giants, lizard kings (got to have lizard kings), crab men, BULLYWUGS (had to right up a conversion of those for my B/X Companion!), yellow musk creepers, grell, the gith, the slaad, nycadaemons and mezzos, that flying vampire chick head and digestive tract...I mean, what's not to like?

    Flailsnails, I suppose.

I, too, enjoy much of the artwork as a real "change-of-pace" from the other Monster Manuals.

[wait, wait...maybe you're talking the D20 Field Folio. I'm referring to the 1st edition AD&D version]
